Keralites' IIT Dreams

Why most keralites are not able to make into IITs?(IIT-JEE)

Why does/did it remain a dream for most of them? Are we not really capAble ?It is high time that we should look into this matter seriously.

Teachers ,parents and students please comment on this .Can we do something on this?

Its not that we aren't capable. We have many students who make it to the other entrance exams. Like fr eg we are consistently among the toppers in IAS exams, Medical entrance too we are among the most prominent states and of late even in management tests like the CAT and XAT we've had great number of students coming out wth awesome results, with many making it to the very best incl the IIM's and other insti's like XLRI.

What i feel as a reason is that the students here don't have the level of competition that's required to ace tests like the JEE. We don't have any major exams in which students get to match their wits with the best in India. Also the level of exposure to the kind of education that an IIT offers isn't beyond a few 100 students in the cities. We don't see many appear for the JEE from cities other than TVM, Kochi or Trichur. What we need is the drive from the teachers and the parents to help the students and to make them believe that they too can achieve the pinnacle of success in JEE.

Hope the situ improves in future.

i really appreciate your initiative to bring out the issue which most of the people know, but havent discussed much.
As u told ,we have not yet been able to make a commentable mark in IITs.but that doesnt mean that we are not capable.
i feel it is the lack of proper preparation from the part of the students forms the bottleneck.

i back in this issue abt our contribution to IITs.and it is due to the lack of proper preparation. But students cant
be blamed for that.it is due to the lack of proper guidance for IIT-JEE.
bcos u know ,many of my friends who made it to the top of kerala entrance were not able to crack IIT-JEE.
even none from top 10 made it,if im right.

Hello
I am doing my PhD in IIT Madras. I find this place full of stupid teachers who have not read a good research paper for the last 10-15 years. Studying here is a waste of time. I am afraid the situation is same in other IITs too. If you are good to clear/get good marks in an exam like JEE you will do good anywhere you go. This IIT stupidity may give you a brand name but I don;t tink it will give you a better eduation than NIT or some other good state engg colleges. My openion is very frank and much thought after.

I WOULD LIKE TO TELL U THIS ,,,

WE HAVE MISTAKEN LITERACY FOR EDUCATION ,WE SAY WE ARE 100% LITERATE , WE AIN'T THAT EDUCATED...

The problem is not that JEE is tough. The problem is that it has questions at such high levels that they can be answered only with the help of coaching. A student's school education alone will not do.

I am an IITian, passing out this
year.

Considering the old JEE, I would
say the emphasis is on wrong end.
It is better to know principles
rather than knowing solutions of
all possible problems.

I rarely find teachers ensuring
proper attention to what they
teach. They are mostly interested
in the solution rather than the
approach.

It may seem strange though valid
that many of us were never taught
why multiplication is commutative
in 3rd standard. And no one even
questioned it. When there are
simple explanations it must be
taught.

Second would be aptitude to read
more literature outside textbook.
I use to read outside subject, not
really because I understood them
put must have improved my aptitude.

There are students from kerala
~ 20 who get into IIT Madras
every year. Rank 3,4, 12, and many
more from top 100 in state entrance
in my year were able to clear JEE.

And I really feel we make up a
superior community in IIT Madras,
because all of us enjoyed our
subjects, rather than a group
of people who entered just because
of intensive training for almost
24 hours.

I've very bad reports about the
new entrance test, almost 100 out
of 400 students who passed in
the new objective test couldn't
clear first year maths and computer
science paper. I seriously feel
earlier JEE was better.

BTW,
I didn't have a coaching
and all my tuition teachers
severely discouraged preparing
for JEE. This trend should be
reverted.

hi m an btech iitiam from kerala.

i would like to explain the reason as i understand, that many people don't clear JEE from kerala.

the reason is keralites are too smart. lemme explain why this seemingly advantageous quality results in poor conversion for keralites in jee...

the basic necessity for a place to perform well in JEE is the presence of BTech IITians in that place, who start coaching classes for JEE or teach in coaching classes.

People from other states are very unambitious, that even after completing their 4 yars in IIT, they are ready to settle for a job like entrance coaching (Which is noble and lucrative as such, but doesn't put to use the knowledge that you have gained in your 4 years at IIT). But Keralites in IITs are very smart people. I don't know any Keralite from IIT who have ambitions as unfulfilling as teaching in an entrance coaching place, unless it is a temperory gig. Hence noone is present here to guide the smart kids of kerala and train them to get to the IITs. I don't want to make a judgement on whether this is right or wrong,
But to the PhD guy from IIT Madras, dude, you are a phaddu. You have no right to even talk here.

Coaching is a big factor.. I never really had anything other than Brilliant's correspondence course.. I cleared JEE, but with a useless rank..With better coaching, I feel there is nothing stopping students in kerala

If a student is skillful in mathematics, then I'M SURE, jee adv is JUST an entrance exam for him
